The dance club is run by an instructor from Fit2dance club, Suzie Hopkins. Suzie is a British and Welsh aerobics and dance fitness instructor who has more than 20 years experience working with young people with disabilities and learning difficulties. Her enthusiasm and energy is infectious. The dance club runs on Friday evenings until 4:30pm and is open to the pupils of Key Stage 3, 4 and the Leaver’s class. Some of the children who have been attending the club represenedt the school on March 19th 2010 at the South Wales Dance Festival at the Beaufort Ballroom on Beaufort. A big well done is deserved to the nine pupils who performed their street style dance to “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas which the pupils helped choreograph.
Pedal Power Each week the 5x60 Programme part funds the opportunity for Key Stage 3 Autism to participate in Pedal Power at Bute Park (www.cardiffpedalpower.org). This runs once a week during school time and both the pupils and staff really enjoy themselves. The children have the chance to hire specially adapted trikes and bikes designed for disabled adults and children. This enables the pupils to enjoy cycling regardless of age or ability. What is 5x60? 5 x 60 is a national physical activity programme designed and promoted by the Sports Council for Wales, in partnership with local education authorities across Wales. - The programme aims to create opportunities for young people of secondary school age to engage regularly, in sport or physical activities.
- The programme aims to achieve the Welsh Assembly Governments’ target that 90% of all young people in Wales will participate regularly and frequently in physical activity.
- 5 x 60 - Get with it – encourages young people who do not currently participate in regular physical activity. To do this, the programme offers a mixture of
- Competitive sporting opportunities – for example, lunch time football or netball league; intra school or inter school matches
- Recreation and informal sporting opportunities - for example, walking, Frisbee, cheer leading, swimming, aerobics, street dance, Boxercise
- Coached activities – for example, tennis, badminton, table tennis
- Activities in the outdoors – for example – surfing, mountain walking, orienteering, cycling
- These activities will take place on and off school sites, before school, at breaks and lunch times and after school. They will be lead by teachers, coaches, young people who are sport leaders and other Deliverers. The programme is co-ordinated by 5 x 60 Officers attached to each school.
- Typically, the young people who will become part of the 5 x 60 programme are those who, for a number of reasons, do not currently participate regularly in physical activity. They may not enjoy ‘traditional’ sports; they may feel that they are not good enough to be part of a school team; they may be overweight or just lack the confidence and motivation to get started. Or they may just not have had the opportunity to take part in activities out of school time.
- 5 x 60 is for ALL young people, whatever their ability or disability
- 5 x 60 will offer these young people:
- A fun, safe environment in which they can achieve success at their own level and pace
- A young person centred approach
- Motivation to enjoy taking part, without judgement about ability
- Recognition for their achievement and encouragement to progress to regular and frequent physical activity
But we can’t do it without YOU!
Currently the 560 officer at Ysgol Ty Coch is conducting questionnaires with the children in key stage 3, 4 and 5 in order to find out which sports they would most like to be put on during after school clubs.
