The Welsh region handed over the keys at a special presentation held at the Cardiff Marriott. Miss Hodges, Carol Gillard, Aaron & Harry from Key Stage 3 attended the ceremony and received the keys from Chairman of the Wales region Mr Ed Meggitt, who said: ‘It was a pleasure to present Ysgol Ty Coch with one of our buses; this is what the charity is all about. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Update for Children In Need day.
A few members of staff really got into the swing of things my dressing as females to raise money for both Children in Need and Movember. Well done to Scott Williams, Paul Smith and Aron Bradley and to eceryone who took part we managed to raise over £90.00. Ysgol Ty Coch's wonderful male students and , if few, male staff, are growing their facial hair for Movember. What is Movember?
Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for cancers that affect men. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days. They seem to have made a pretty good start and side bet's are taking place on the style of moustache we can expect to see! Mr Myhill is currently going for the Mexican bandito look (reminiscent of Antonio Banderas, the jury is still out on that one). UPDATE: Mr Myhill has told us he is now going for a 1970's Welsh rugby player look. Any ideas which one? Answers via email please. Andrew Chick is currently sporting the Bear Grylls look, very suitable for a Dof E Leader. The Leavers students are also growing their facial hair for 'Movember' too, so good luck to: James, Daniel ,Corey, Jason, Conor and Gareth We are still not sure on the look Mr Bradley, Paul and the 2 Scotts are going for but will keep you posted as the hair grows! You can sponsor any of these guys in their endeavours through the school. Good luck to them all and to the charity. A gentleman is, after all, still a man no matter how gentle he is.
We turned the school PINK on the last day of term, to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awarness. Apart from looking fantastic we managed to raise £115.00, which is fab, so well done and huge Thank You to everyone who helped
On Saturday 1st May 2010 Gareth Holdstock and Stefan Witkowski ran 26 miles carrying 56lb on their backs from Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff Castle via the Taff Trail. WHY? These two very kind men were running to raise much needed funds for the school. They made it Gareth & Stefan completed their run in 6hrs 4 mins, actual running time. Both of them made, it even though Stefan's knee problem worsened and they are suffering with sore feet and backs. Louise provided essential support and encouragement throughout and did an exceptional job. All of us at TY Coch, pupils and staff would like to Thank Gareth, Stefan and Louise well done to all of you. Here's their story in Gareth's own word's
'We started on time and were going really well for the first few miles until Stefan had a confession to make!! He had a knee injury that he was aware of before starting but neglected to tell me. I was running fine without any problems with the excellent support from my wife Louise. Stefan was feeling discouraged because I was in front a lot, I did say that we started together and we would finish together, which made him feel better, it was just that I could not run at his slower pace so we decided that I would run at my pace and wait at certain points for him to catch up. This worked well for both of us. In between the Aberfan and Abercynon area Stefan was in a lot of pain so we stopped for 10 mins to put a pain killer patch around his knee and to take some pain killers, we also took the opportunity to have a banana.
We carried on to the Navigation Hotel but were behind time. The flags came out as we went through Cilfynydd and we had a lot of toots and looks from passers-by, the flags remained out until our first major stop at Hawthorn shops where there was ice and frozen peas to put on swollen joints, feet and shoulders. We again had some food and drink. We also changed socks to try and stop blisters (try being the operative word). My wife did an excellent job patching us up with zinc oxide tape on the back and shoulders to again TRY and stop the rubbing. We tried to convince Stefan to ditch the bag and carry on just normal running but he was defiant, he promised he would be fine. At this stage we had also collected just over £20 from passers-by.
We set off again and continued along the Taff Trail near Griffin Mill garages to the Taffs Well area and then went up the back of Castle Coch which was really hard going just as coming down the other side was. Another pit stop at the Lewis Arms in Tongwynlais where I was going to cut the straps on Stefans bag so that he had no choice but to either stop or carry on without it. He again said he was fine and that the pain killers were now doing their job and that as he was this close that he wanted to see it through till the end which I totally understood.
Back to running again and Stefan had improved a lot and was running strong and for the first time he was in front of me going past the weir near Cardiff High School Old Boys Rugby Ground. My quads were very swollen and hard just above the knee and I found it hard to bend the knees, a few choice words to myself and some motivational thoughts soon got me going again. Onto Hailey Park, Llandaff North and I could see the cathedral and the tip of the Millennium Stadium, the end was near.
Through the communication from Louise relaying messages back and forth between me and Stefan we agreed that I would wait at Black Weir for Stefan and we could finish the last part together. Just getting to Black weir was painful the quads were hurting again so I put my thumbs in my mouth and bit hard on the nails with my teeth to make them hurt more than my legs so that I could forget about them, if that makes sense.
The last leg again was hard for both of us our feet felt as though we were running on burning hot coals and the bags were rubbing, I don't think anything did not hurt. Out of the castle grounds and turn left onto Cowbridge Rd toward the main Castle entrance, we had to fight past the busy pavement and had a few snaps taken by some Japanese tourists, typical.
We could see the end and some friends and family there to greet us with cheers and whistles it was great. I sank to my knees and could not wait to get the bag off. My hamstring cramped up as did my toes Stefan was the same. It was an enjoyable day in a sadistic kind of way and I would do it again. A friend has suggested the Marathon des Sable where you run across the Sahara Desert so watch this space.
We would like to thank you all at the school for you support during this event and I would really like to thank my wife Louise for her hard work, Stefan for his determination and grit, and finally Apple ipod without you and your tunes it would have been hell. Now the hard work of collecting in the money.'

************************************************************************************************************** On Friday 30th April a charity golf fund raising day was hosted by Andrew Lee at the Vale Resort and Spa. The fundraising event was held in support of the Ysgol Ty Coch Leavers’ Department annual summer ball which takes place on June 25th at the resort.
Thirteen teams from local businesses competed in various competitions, ranging from the longest drive to the nearest pin. The students and staff from the Leavers’ Dept at Ysgol Ty Coch kicked the competition for when the teams ‘tee’d off’, and then returned at the end of the day to present all prizes to the winners and losers!
The estimated £2,000 raised will go towards the second annual summer ball, which was held for the first time last year in conjunction with Park Lane School and Ysgol Hen Felin. It was such a massive success last year that the schools were keen to host it again this year, allowing the pupils the chance to dress-up and celebrate them leaving school. The monies raised will ensure the pupils have a fantastic night at the Vale and will help fund the hire of limousines booked to take the students to the ball, as well as other exciting surprises.
Andrew Lee, was responsible for the organisation of the event. He commented: ‘The players thoroughly enjoyed themselves playing a memorable round of golf whilst competing against fellow colleagues and business partners. We estimate to have raised £2,000 for Ysgol Ty Coch’s ball which will make sure they have a great night when they leave in the summer. Myself and my colleague David Morris have also been invited to the ball as guests of honour so we have another exciting event to look forward to.”
Maria Rees, Ysgol Ty Coch Assistant Deputy Head added: “We are extremely grateful to everyone who supported the Leaver’s department and took part in the day. The figure raised is a fantastic achievement and will really make a difference to the ball. On behalf of all the staff and students we would like to thank everyone for their participation and a big special thanks to Andrew and his fellow golfers.
