The School Council at Ysgol Ty Coch

Why have a School Council?
The School Council helps pupils to make choices, to form opinions and to provide a level of empowerment that they otherwise may not experience. The School Council provides our pupils with a voice in the running of the school. Ysgol Ty Coch belongs to the pupils and the School Council is their platform for positively and realistically contributing to Whole School Improvement.

How does the School Council work?
The School Council at Ysgol Ty Coch is made up from 12 Year group Representatives. These pupils were voted for and elected to their posts in September 2010. Representatives are elected annually.
The School Council meets every half term and provides a forum for discussion for pupils to discuss issues affecting them.

Minutes are taken at each meeting and these are distributed to all classes.
Pupils are able to raise issues at the meetings and additionally, classes are given discussion topics to debate before meetings. The co-ordinating teacher and members of support staff also attend meetings.

Who is on the School Council at present?
Representatives
The School Council has to be democratically elected every year.
At Ysgol Ty Coch we return a representative for each year group.

School Council Elections 2010-2011

As several pupils have been nominated for each year group, with no representative having more than one vote, pupils and staff have been asked to vote for which nominated pupil they wish to have on the School Council. This vote will be based on whether they have already served on School Council, who they feel they could speak to about any issues in school and whom they think would be a good representative for both the pupils and the school.

A big ‘Thank You’ to The Lord Taverners, Wales region, who, after a plea by the school council have provided us with a lovely new mini bus. The Welsh region handed over the keys at a special presentation held at the Cardiff Marriott.
Miss Hodges, Carol Gillard, Aaron & Harry from Key Stage 3 attended the ceremony and received the keys from Chairman of the Wales region Mr Ed Meggitt, who said:
‘It was a pleasure to present Ysgol Ty Coch with one of our buses; this is what the charity is all about.
