Speech and Language Therapists help learners develop their communication skills. This may include supporting spoken language, understanding instructions, social communication and the use of alternative or augmentative communication systems. Therapists work closely with staff to ensure communication strategies are used throughout the school day, helping every learner to express themselves and make their voice heard.
When a learner is referred to the Speech and Language Therapy Service, the Speech and Language Therapist works closely with the learner, family and school staff to provide the best possible support. They gather relevant information, work alongside other professionals where appropriate, and collaborate with parents and teachers to identify suitable communication and learning targets. The therapist provides advice and training to staff so that support can be embedded throughout the school day, helping learners practise and develop their skills in a range of everyday situations.
The Speech and Language Therapist also monitors progress regularly, reviews targets and adapts support as needed. They contribute to annual reviews and maintain regular communication with parents and carers, ensuring everyone works together to support the learner's communication, understanding and overall development. Our aim is to help every learner build confidence, develop their communication skills and reach their full potential.
