At Ysgol Ty Coch, Pathfinders provides a nurturing, structured and highly personalised learning environment where every pupil is supported to achieve their full potential. Communication is at the heart of everything we do, and we are committed to developing effective communication skills through spoken language, augmentative and alternative communication systems, visual supports, PECS and Pyramid approaches, ensuring that every learner has a voice and can communicate their needs, preferences and ideas with confidence. Our curriculum is designed around the six Areas of Learning and Experience (AoLEs), promoting literacy, numeracy, communication and digital competence as cross-curricular responsibilities. Through engaging and meaningful learning experiences, pupils develop language and literacy skills, mathematical understanding, problem-solving abilities, scientific enquiry, technological awareness, creativity, physical development and social understanding. We place a strong emphasis on promoting the Welsh language, Welsh culture and multilingualism. For some pupils, personalised learning pathways also include opportunities to work towards nationally recognised OCR qualifications, including Entry Level and Life and Living Skills awards. These qualifications enable learners to gain accreditation for their achievements while developing practical, transferable skills that promote independence, communication, personal wellbeing and employability. Through these tailored programmes, pupils can work towards qualifications that reflect their individual strengths, interests and future aspirations, helping to prepare them for further education, training, supported employment and increased participation within their communities. 

Within Pathfinders, we encourage learning through direct experiences, investigation, exploration and practical problem-solving activities that are relevant to everyday life. Structured approaches such as TEACCH, visual timetables and consistent routines help pupils feel secure, develop independence and engage positively in learning. Approaches such as Attention Autism are used to extend engagement, attention and participation, whilst supporting pupils to enjoy learning and celebrate success. Our staff adopt trauma-informed practices and understand the importance of routine, predictability and positive relationships in helping pupils manage fears, anxieties and challenging experiences. We work closely with families and a range of multi-disciplinary professionals, including health and therapy services, to ensure a holistic approach to supporting each learner's individual needs. 

A key priority within Pathfinders is the development of functional life skills and independence. We provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to make choices, solve problems, develop self-help skills and take increasing responsibility for themselves and their learning. Pupils are encouraged to use their voice to influence their learning experiences and begin to consider their aspirations for the future. Through age-appropriate and engaging learning environments, we focus on preparing pupils for life beyond school by developing the skills necessary to access future educational provision, community opportunities, employment pathways and, where appropriate, greater independence in adulthood. We also support learners to understand their own health, wellbeing and personal safety while building self-esteem, resilience, confidence and a strong sense of achievement. Through strong partnerships between home and school, Pathfinders aims to equip every pupil with the communication, independence and life skills they need to thrive, participate meaningfully in their communities and achieve the best possible outcomes for their future.
