Provision

At Ysgol Ty Coch we provide a broad, appropriate and stimulating curriculum, which includes the New Curriculum for Wales – challenging each child to reach his/her own individual potential.  Pupils in the Autism Provision have full access to this curriculum.  In order for them to do this successfully, we work with each child in accordance with their own individual stage of development to help them to communicate their wants, needs and thoughts.  We use a number of strategies, including: PECS, Signalong, AAC (Alternative Augmentative Communication) and TEACCH. In 2018, we introduced 2 new approaches. These are the AET framework to ensure consistency in classrooms and Attention Autism to improve engagement.

Pupil voice is of upmost importance in the provision and indeed across the school and a number of assessment for learning strategies have been developed and adapted to suit the needs of our pupils; ensuring that all are given the opportunity to make choices and evaluate their own performance as is appropriate.

The Buarth y Capel site is  the provision for pupils aged 14-19 with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Both sites work closely together, with a "one school" ethos. Some staff teach across both sites and  learning utilises both sites e.g  Post 16 visiting BYC for circuits on a Wednesday. Other pupils from BYC may access option subjects such as Duke of Edinburgh at the Tonteg site.
